Before & After Laser Treatment
Laser Dentistry What to Expect
Laser dentistry can treat a wide range of dental health concerns and cosmetic dentistry needs with quick appointments, minimal downtime, and speedier recoveries.
Tongue Ties, Lip Ties
Laser dentistry can be used to treat a common condition called tongue-tie, or frenulum restriction. This condition occurs when the tongue or lips are over-attached to the mouth by the frenulum. Many children are born with tongue-tie and can be treated early in life to prevent complications with speech development.
Laser dentistry eliminates the need for a surgical procedure. Children and adults can be treated for tongue tie using laser dentistry. The laser severs the frenulum releasing the tongue for a more natural range of motion.
Treating tongue tie early on in life helps children prevent an increased risk of tooth decay, maladjustments, and speech impediments. Proud Smiles Dental is proud to offer laser frenectomy to adolescents and adults, with comfort and ease.
A gummy or uneven gum line can make your smile appear unbalanced. Laser dentistry can be used to recontour the gum line for a healthier, more aesthetically pleasing smile.
Patients with a large gum surface, or a gummy smile, can find it difficult to receive dental restoration because the teeth are too short. Laser dentistry can be used to push the gum line back exposing more of the tooth surface. Treating a gummy smile can help patients feel more confident in their smile.
For patients with an uneven gum line, Dr. Paulen can use lasers to even out the contour of the gum line. Gum contouring no longer requires invasive gum surgery. Laser dentistry can recontour gum lines without the need for stitches. Laser dentistry also reduces patients downtime and minimizes swelling.
Gum bleaching, also known as depigmentation, is a relatively simple and painless procedure for changing the color of gums that have dark spots. Dr. Paulen will begin with a thorough evaluation of your gum health, addressing any existing gum disease.
Gingival hyperpigmentation is a harmless condition that can cause spots or darkening of the gums, impacting the appearance of your smile. Using a soft tissue laser, Dr. Paulen can treat hyperpigmentation or dark spots and provide a symmetrical, natural looking gum line that will complement your overall appearance. Gum bleaching is typically safe and effective for all patients and is completed in one visit.
After the application of a topical anesthetic, Dr. Paulen will gently use the laser to lighten spots and dark areas of gum tissue, also stimulating the natural healing response and the regrowth of healthy, uniform gum tissue. Patients can return to their normal daily routine right away with no dietary restrictions. Mild sensitivity is common for a short period following the procedure.
Mucocele are a common condition that appears as small fluid-filled sacks that form inside the mouth. The sacks can be clear or bluish in color and most commonly found on the cheeks, the lower lip or on the roof or floor of the mouth.
In most cases, mucocele are caused by a blocked salivary gland. Typically harmless, mucocele can interfere with eating or speaking and may cause permanent scar tissue if left untreated. Deeper mucocele can cause discomfort and should be looked at by your dentist. Any swelling or lumps found inside your mouth that persists for longer than a few days should be examined by Dr. Paulen.
Traditionally treated using surgery, Dr. Paulen can often remove a mucocele using dental lasers. The laser can clear the blocked or injured saliva duct and remove the fluid-filled sack. Laser dentistry reduces healing time and is less invasive than traditional removal methods.
Cold sores are a virus that manifests as small sores on the lips or inner cheeks. Cold sores often take weeks to heal and breakouts typically occur during high stress. Diode lasers can treat cold sores and may even reduce breakouts in the treated area.
Patients with cold sores can have them treated by Dr. Paulen using diode lasers. The diode laser actually kills the virus that causes the cold sore in the area of the lesion. Some patients require several diode laser treatments per outbreak. The lasers are gentle and patients do not require any numbing agent or pain medication. In some cases, patients see results within just 24 hours after their laser treatment.
Over time, patients who treat cold sores with laser therapy typically see a reduction in breakout size and frequency.
