Oral Conscious Sedation: what to expect

Before providing oral sedation options, Dr. Patel will discuss your health and medical history. This is to ensure that an oral sedative is safe and will be effective as expected. There are many dental services that can be made more relaxing for anxious patients with the use of oral sedation. In some cases we may be able to perform several treatments in one visit while you are relaxed.
Oral conscious sedation is the use of an oral sedative or pill to put you in a relaxed state before we begin your dental procedure. For this to be effective, an at-home dose is typically prescribed so that you will arrive as you begin to feel its effects. For this reason, you will need to arrange for an escort to and from your dental appointment.
This type of sedation allows you to be “in control” of your bodily functions as well as conversation, while unaware of any pain or discomfort. It is not unusual to have little to no memory of your dental visit afterwards. Oral sedatives take an hour or so to become effective and can take several hours to completely wear off.
