  •  Be aware of what foods may trigger your acid reflux. In some cases, foods might not even be a cause of discomfort, but it is always a good place to start. Keeping a food journey makes it easy to keep track of your daily intake.
  • Do not overeat. While specifics foods might not affect your reflux, overeating can. Sometimes it can be helpful to space out your meals into four or more smaller meals throughout the day.
  • Quit smoking. Smoking decreases saliva production which may increase stomach acid and irritation in the esophagus.
  • Lying down after you have eaten can have a direct impact on your reflux. When you lay down, it makes it easier for the acids in your stomach to move back up into your esophagus. Also, laying down on your back even hours after eaten may cause discomfort. Keeping your head on an incline while you sleep may help prevent acid reflux.
  • Although there is no clear evidence, people who are overweight tend to suffer more from acid reflux. Be aware of your weight and note that losing a few pounds can often help lower the intensity of reflux.
